HEALTH OFFICIALS AT THE HELM - DHARAVI

A lot of credits go to health workers at Mumbai for their stupendous work in controlling the spread of coronavirus at Dharavi, the biggest slum in Asia.

The tough contract tracing and chase of virus have considerably lead to reduced cases in the area.  Dharavi, being a densely populated area, the cases in April 2020 were nearly 500.  The Municipal Corporation was all praise by the Health Ministry at the country capital for ensuring reduction in average cases from 43 to 19 in a span of less than two months.  The growth rate of cases reduced with effective measures taken by the Corporation.  Ultimately, the case doubling time has also improved - 43 days in May to 78 days in June.

Maximum population depends on community toilets and household occupancy being very high e.g. around ten people in a space of 100 sq ft.  The houses located in narrow lanes with 2/3 storeys, coupled with commercial activity.

Of course, physical distancing being a tuff ask besides no possibility of home quarantine.  The slogan - Tracing, Tracking, Testing and Treating is the salient feature in strictly containing areas.  Besides, the Corporation also supplied essential goods to the entire community without interruptions.
