END OF SAMUDRA SETU

The repatriation of Indians stranded in many other countries due to COVID-19 pandemic, has posed a challenging task to the Government authorities.

A special operation in the name of "Samudra Setu" was organised by Navy to bring back stranded Indians to the Indian Ports effective 5th May 2020.  With stringent measures and co-ordinating with various agencies where Indians were stranded, it has earned a lot of fruit.  A overwhelming figure of nearly 4,000 people have been successfully brought back till this date.  The operations were carried out by INS Jalshawa, INS Airavat, Shardul and Magar.  All together have travelled to a combined distance of 23,000 kms by sea.

All Indian returnees have been brought to Kochi, Thoothukudi and Porbandhar.  It was a marvellous job by the Navy in bringing back Indians by avoiding outbreak of any infection.  Stringent measures were put in place by implementing safety and medical needs.

The Naval ships were put in force and ensured people who travel maintain social distancing.  The ships were equipped with COVID-19 medical facilities and offered to concerned during ship travel.

A woman passenger gave birth a baby boy upon reaching Kochi.  It may be recalled that the Navy was involved in similar ventures during operation Sukoon in 2006 and Operation Rohat in 2015.
