LIFE FROM A DEAD

Strange things happen on the earth raising the eye brows of many.  Such an excellent event took place when parts from a motorcycle accident victim harvested in a well planned meticulous operation in Kerala.  The eyes, kidneys, heart, hands and small intestines harvested from the victim.

The heart was transplanted to a cardiac patient aged 55 at an Hospital in Kochi.  In little over three hours from the time of extraction, it started beating in the recipient body.  The victim, 27 year old, was declared brain dead after a motorcycle accident.  A team of doctors headed by a cardiothoracic surgeon has successfully completed the great event.  The beneficiary was already undergoing treatment for dilated cardiomyopathy for the past eight years.

Earlier, the heart functioning of this beneficiary was about 15% and hence he had registered for a suitable transplant under a Special Project of the State Health Department.  The heart was airlifted from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi by an helicopter of State Police.  This is the second airlift of the sector after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.  Due to restrictions on account of pandemic, only four member doctors group, instead of eight, could travel for this noble cause.  The extraction of heart took three hours.

Seven other organs of the victim donated to seven different recipients.  After the landing at the helipad of a Hotel in Kochi, the heart was shifted to one hospital and the other parts were shifted to other hospitals concerned.
