ON LINE CLASSES - DISABILITIES STRUGGLE



Due to serious COVID-19 pandemic, many many institutions have been conducting on-line educational classes in the past few months.  This is to cope up with the changing scenario and to make students in the limelight of study activity.

But it is a different story for students who are disabled while most of them found it a major hurdle during online classes.  A survey in Bengaluru has reported.  More than 50% students struggle and attend classes irregularly and 77% unable to cope up with.  As a result, they fall behind the learning curve and fail to have access for distance learning.  The  surveys and reports are from community based organisations.

Such a kind of students are mostly from Odisha and the balance are from Haryana, Puducherry, Jammu and Kashmir and Tamil Nadu.  The sample size comprises more than 2,000 students from classes 1 to 12, 1,000 parents, 303 teachers and 105 adults with disabilities.  Visual impairment, speech and hearing impairment, intellectual challenges and multiple disorders are some disabilities among the affected people.

Various views have been reported.  Teachers are not giving attentions, little knowledge technology usage and lack of educational materials suited to online.  Poor students unable to possess computers or smartphones.

Children prefer study materials in suitable format for disabled.  More than 60% students expressed requiring laptops, tablets or smartphones.  Many needed data/wifi support.

The students need to be grouped differently depending on the need of the persons.
