GETTING READY - VACCINE FOR INDIANS

While the infections on account of corona virus is gradually on the declining trend in various places in the country, the preparations are actively taking place to vaccinate 250 to 300 millions Indians on priority basis.  Corona warriors, above 65 year old people, 50 to 65 year old people and people below 50 years of age with chronic diseases are on the utmost priority list to get vaccination done on them.  This process has been planned by the government by the month of July next year.  A quantity of 500-600 million doses of vaccine are to be procured in the time frame.  The Government of India is in constant touch with the states for necessary arrangements so that the launch of Covid-19 vaccine would be a great success across the country.

The initial vaccination is likely to start during the first quarter of next year, which is likely to be ready at that time.  The process of approval to manufacturers is under the emergency use authorisation, analyse the full phase 3 clinical trials details followed by marketing approvals so as to use the vaccine for general public.  The exact list of people to be vaccinated is a challenging task.  The states are given the full responsibility to draw a list of population groups for vaccination during the first phase.  About 30 million frontline workers form the highest priority since they are prone to maximum risk and exposure to the infection, according to a senior health representative.

The National Vaccination Committee will make out different categories for administering the vaccine for Covid-19.  The states are supposed to work on setting up committees and co-ordinate the vaccination process at the ground level and ensure minimum disruptions to other healthcare activities.  The Union Health Secretary has ordered all the states to fall in line.  With various groups under the belt, the vaccination process will span over a year.  It is imperative for the states and districts in forming a strong advisory and co-ordination mechanism for smooth process of Covid-19 vaccine introduction.
